Roseanne Diab

Professor Diab comes to GenderInSITE after serving as Executive Officer of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) for the past ten years. An esteemed Atmospheric Scientist focusing on climate change and air quality, she is Emeritus Professor in Environmental Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as a Fellow of the University, the South African Geographical Society, TWAS, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and a Member of ASSAf. Professor Diab has served on numerous international committees such as the International Ozone Commission (IOC), the Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (CACGP) and the SPARC (Stratospheric Processes and their Role in Climate) Steering Group. She currently serves on the African Union High-level Panel on Emerging Technologies. She has been particularly active in the area of gender in science, serving as co-chair on the Gender Advisory Panel to TWAS, working with the OWSD National Chapter in South Africa, and acting as head of GenderInSITE’s Regional Focal Point in Southern Africa through ASSAf, between 2014 and 2018.


Phyllis Kalele

Phyllis Kalele is the Coordinator-Africa Region for GenderInSITE and also Senior Liaison Officer, African Collaboration, at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). She is responsible for: building and strengthening existing academy partnerships in and for Africa; leading academy activities on the continent with the aim of advocating for the use of evidence-based science in policy making and increasing the visibility of African scientists; directing support for the establishment of new national senior and young academies of science; overseeing the implementation of GenderInSITE’s programmes in Africa; fundraising; and is the principal contact person at ASSAf in Africa. Ms Kalele holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and Zoology and a Master of Science in Environment Science. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Science and Technology Studies specialising in bibliometrics, at the Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Elzarie Barnard

Elzarie Barnard is the Liaison Officer for Gender in Science, Technology and Innovation at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). She is the secretariat to the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South African National Chapter, and GenderInSITE (science, innovation, technology and engineering) activities. She graduated with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PDM) from Wits Business School, and completed an internship at New York University’s (NYU) Center of Multicultural Education and Programmes, and LGBTQ Student Center. She completed a BSc (Honours) in Human Physiology and a BSc in Human Physiology, Genetics and Psychology. She is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Science and Technology Studies specialising in research management and evaluation at the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST), Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
